You make backups of pretty much everything, images, videos, documents, website favourites, mobile phone data, emails… you do I hope.

Why should you back up your Facebook? You may well think that  Facebook already does that already. Well yes they do, however here a few reasons why should make a copy for yourself.

  1. What if your account gets hacked, you could lose your friend lists, updates, photos etc
  2. What if you delete things in error.
  3. Is your Facebook profile important to you? What about all the time you put into it. Facebook can go wrong, even it’s only a minute amount of users, one day it could be you.
  4. Having a backup makes it easy to restore your friend lists saving time trying to remember all of your ‘friends’.

So how do you do it?

First we will look at how to backup your profile account as this is the easiest to do. Fan pages are a bit different.

1. Log into your Facebook account.
2. Click on the down arrow in the top right of the page, next to home.
3. Choose Account Settings.
4. Click on Download a copy of your Facebook data.

5. Click on the green Start My Archive Button.

6. Click on the second green Start My Archive button.

7. You will receive an email when the process is done.  Depending on the amount of data, this can take some time, so go back to it tomorrow.
8. Once you get the email,  click on the link. You will then need to verify it is you. Now you will be able to download a zipped version of your profile.

9.  Now download the achive to your computer by clicking on the.. you guessed it, the green Download Archive button.

10.  You now have a zipped (compressed file). When you uncompress this file you will have a bunch of folders. It is like an offline version of your Facebook Profile.

Now what about your business page. Well this is not so straight forward. There is no obvious way in Facebook to backup. (Tell me if I am wrong.) You will need to use a 3rd party website to do this. Backupify.com is an online service which offers different levels of service. I have tested the free version which backs up 3 different social media accounts. My verdict is that it does work, although not as intuitive to analyse the backup data, but hey it is still a backup.

Let me know how you backup your important data or if you need any help get in touch.
