Having your own business is hard at the best of times, so trying to retain that work-life balance is something that we all struggle with.

Being a mother of 2 boys I find this particularily hard at times.

So I thought I’d share my top 5 tips for mums with their own businesses on work-life balance:

1. Prioritise – I’m a great believer in lists and crossing the tasks off! As part of my working day I start with the tasks I’m not looking forward to doing then lead onto the nice tasks to round off the day.

2. Dont say yes to everything. When you say yes to something, you are saying no to someone else. Catherine Eve from the Butterfly project has taught me this and I try to stick to this.

3. Choose the right networking events and groups to attend. Don’t just go along to the opening of a packet of crisps because you think you have to.

4. Try not to work after 9pm at night (easier said than done according to some of the Newcastle Business Mums) – you need some time to rest your brain, otherwise you become less productive.

5. Book ‘me time’ in your diary – even if it is going to an exercise class or catching up with friends.
