Twitter is a great tool for building your brand awareness (for new and existing businesses big or small); you can create loyal followers who often refer businesses to you and is an easy to use tool to drive traffic to your site and/or blog. Twitter can also help raise awareness of your new products and services as well as help you manage effective customer service.

There is a massive business community in the North East and UK which uses twitter but some struggle getting that balance between business and personal life right. Many of you will have heard that common phrase “Don’t witter on Twitter” but using social media for business is also about engaging with your followers and not bombarding with sales messages.

We started using Twitter to raise awareness of Vicki Stone Marketing. I personally enjoy business networking and meeting new people and as a company we’re very passionate about learning new things about other businesses, but we would be exhausted going to every event going.  Twitter was a great way of reaching out to our ‘unaware’ prospects and has most certainly brought us lots of valuable contacts and business.

We spoke to business owners in the North East for their experiences too.

Sarah Parkin from Kids Deserve the best (@SarahKDTB) says, “The day I tweeted ‘I found 3 sausages’ was the turning point when my Twitter experience turned from solely business to human!”

Sarah continues “Twitter is a wonderful tool. I like to work with and support others who have like minded businesses. I have met some fabulous people and have linked with fabulous businesses on Twitter. If I need something I will ask twitter and someone will usually come back with an answer. I have helped families with their childcare, I found our first aid trainers, I found my fabulous website guys here. Best thing I can say is Hurrah for Twitter!”

Vicki’s top 3 tips for Business tweeting:

  • Create a tweet plan and integrate this into your marketing plan. You can do it on a weekly/monthly/quarterly basis (depending on how you plan your other activity). You can schedule tweets in advance using Tweetdeck or Hootsuite which makes life a lot easier. But remember to ‘fill in’ with real time tweets.
  • Inspiration on what to write. Ask business questions, offer solutions to other problems, use it for market research, monitor your competitors’ activity, publish useful tips and advice and respond to tweets that grab your attention.
  • Be Yourself. If you are using Twitter for business, be mindful of what you’re saying to your followers.  As a rule for business I don’t swear, I’m polite by thanking someone for a Retweet or a mention. I don’t think my business followers want to know what I had for breakfast (unless I own a café which does great breakfasts), if I have a hangover (unless I own a cocktail bar with a 2 for 1 offer on) or if I’m on holiday (if I work from home and want some unwanted visitors).
